Local teams participate Tide State Soccer Cup The Vermillion Youth Soccer League sent seven local teams to compete in the Tide State Soccer Cup June 6-9 in Sioux Falls. The teams, ranging in age from U-12 to U-19, faced teams from around the state in the annual competition.
In the U-12 age group, Vermillion sent two teams in both the boys and the girls divisions. The respective teams recorded two wins and a tie along with several close losses. The Vermillion entry in the U-14 girls division did not record a victory but played courageously with only 13 players available for the tournament.
The U-19 boys opened the tournament with a 4-0 routing of Belle Fourche, and then defeated Aberdeen by a score of 3-2. Vermillion lost to Huron in the semi-finals by a score of 5-0. Sean Pederson led the scoring attack for Vermillion with three goals, while Jeff Gilbertson added two on the tournament.
The U-19 Girls opened play with a 4-2 victory over Brookings, then lost 4-1 to Sioux Falls #1. A close 2-1 loss to Yankton was followed by a 4-1 win over Sioux Falls #3. Kaylee Heesch and Emma Erickson led the scoring for Vermillion with three goals a piece.
Although the losses outnumbered the wins, the tournament was a great experience and one that will help to heighten interest in soccer amongst local players. Another promising sign of the strength of the local program was witnessed with the coaches.
"We had five former youth players on the sidelines during the tournament as coaches," said Jeff Pederson, coaching coordinator. "Among those were former VHS players Katy Carlson, Kim Hoffman, Courtney Nelson, and Shawna Baron.
