One killed, two injured in car crash by David Lias A University of South Dakota student was killed and two other USD students were injured in a one-car traffic accident Monday night.
Nandini Rao, 22, Vermillion, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
She was driving a 1994 Ford Tempo on Highway 19, and lost control of the vehicle on a curve approaching Highway 50. The automobile vaulted over Timber Road, according to the Highway Patrol, and struck a tree.
Two passengers in the vehicle, Vinvay Mysore and Mario Kiran, both of Vermillion, were taken by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, IA. Information on their conditions was unavailable.
Rao was wearing a shoulder harness, but had not buckled her lap belt, according to the Highway Patrol. Investigators have yet to determine whether the passengers in the vehicle were wearing seat belts.
The accident occured at approximately 10:19 p.m. Monday. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor. The accident is still under investigation by Trooper Paul Gerken.
