Red Sox beat rival Grey Sox by Steven Thum The Vermillion Red Sox used three homers, two hit by the brothers Merrigan, Jon and Jay, and a strong pitching performance from Rob Miller to down the Vermillion Grey Sox 10-2 last Wednesday night at Prentis Park.
The Red Sox were the visiting team for this State Line League game, but fell behind as the Grey Sox got on the board first.
In the bottom of the first the Grey Sox slapped out three singles against Miller, with Ryan Baedke's safety bringing home brother Aaron Baedke. Miller got Dave Holoch to ground into a doubleplay to end the threat.
Jon Merrigan tied the game as he led off the second with a homer off of Ryan Baedke, the starting hurler for the Grey Sox.
The score remained tied until the top of the third, as the Red Sox managed to manufacture a run. Robin Chute led off with a single, stole second, then came home on a single by Brian Boyer. The Red Sox now led 2-1.
The Red Sox broke the game open in the fourth as Jason Gault led off by reaching base on an error by Grey Sox firstbaseman Bret Mockler. Rob Miller doubled with one out to put two runners in scoring position. Baedke fanned Nathan Dobnay for the second out, but Chute came up big in the clutch with a home run to make it 5-1.
That would be all Miller would need, as the righthander, who pitched for the Grey Sox last year, shut down his former teammates, allowing just one run the rest of the way.
The Red Sox tacked on a run in the sixth as Jon Merrigan singled in Colby Lessman to make it 6-1. Two more runs scored in the seventh as Gault singled in a run, and Jay Merrigan's squeeze bunt brought home another run to make it 8-1.
Brett Bartling singled in a run as Steve Varnes scored in the bottom of the seventh for the Grey Sox, but they would not get closer than that.
Jay Merrigan blasted a two-run homer off of reliever Nick Mayer in the top of the ninth, and Miller worked a perfect ninth to give the Red Sox a 10-2 win.
Jon Merrigan came up a triple short of the cycle for the Red Sox, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Brother Jay Merrigan drove in three runs on the night with a home run
and sacrifice bunt. Jason Gault tripled, singled twice, scored twice, and drove in one run. Robin Chute hit a homer, a double, and scored two runs.
Ryan Baedke and Brett Bartling both singled twice for the Grey Sox, and both drove in one run.
Rob Miller fanned 14 batters in getting the win, allowing six hits in his complete game victory. Miller didn't walk a single batter, but did hit three opposing batters. Ryan Baedke gave up eight runs, seven of them earned, in 7 1/3 innings of work. Baedke struck out six and walked three.
The Red Sox turned one doubleplay, and left 10 runners on base. The Grey Sox stranded five baserunners.
The two teams will meet again on Father's Day at Prentis Park.
