The South Dakota Department of Transportation has contracted with Topkote, Inc. of Yankton to place an asphalt surface treatment on numerous roads. The surface treatment consists of an application of oil that is covered with rock chips. This type of road treatment may cause flying rock chips and fresh oil may be present on the road surface.
Motorists need to use caution in these work zones and adhere to the posted advisory speed limits. Flaggers and pilot cars will be directing motorists through the work.
Roadways in the Yankton area that will be affected include: Hwy. 314 from city limits west 3 miles; Hwy. 50 from the city limits east 2 miles; Hwy. 50 from the intersection of Hwy. 81 west 12 miles to Tabor; Hwy. 81 from the Tabor road north 6 miles to the Lesterville road, and Hwy. 50 from west of Tyndall to 3 miles west of Avon.
These projects have begun and will continue for the next two weeks. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible as they encounter this work, or use caution and reduced speed if they must travel through the work.
