State Hershey track meet is June 28

State Hershey track meet is June 28 Local Hershey Track & Field Meets have provided over 40 communities in South Dakota with a great recreational experience, as towns across the state have been getting ready for the State Hershey Track & Field Meet.

The state meet is sponsored by Hershey Foods Corporation and South Dakota Parks & Recreation Association. The state meet is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 at the DakotaDome, Vermillion.

Over 3,000 boys and girls ages 9-14 have participated in the program and approximately 1,500 will be making the trip to the state meet. Countless volunteers have made this event possible throughout the state. The Hershey Corporation and various organizations insure that the Hershey Program is "more than a track meet."

Each participant and volunteer coach at the state meet receives a free lunch, and the opportunity to make new friends. The top eight qualifiers in each event will receive a ribbon, a certificate and a t-shirt.

A minimum of five and a maximum of 25 young athletes from each state qualify for the trip to the nationals. The all-expense paid trip is chaperoned by members of the South Dakota Parks & Recreation Association.

The tentative schedule for the state meet is:

The day begins with a coaches meeting at 8:05 a.m.

A parade of athletes at 8:45 a.m.

Events begin at 9 p.m.

General order of events is:

Morning: Preliminary for 50 meters/100 meters; semifinals for the 50 meters/100 meters; finals for the 1600 meters.

Noon and afternoon: 800 meters; finals for the 50 and 100 meters, 400 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters and 4×100 relay; field events begin at 9 a.m. and conclude around 2 p.m.

The meet will conclude around 4:30-5 p.m.

Admission fee is $2 for all spectators.
