Yankton Cubs prevail over Vermillion June 16 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion First National Bank and Yankton Cubs met in the return match in Babe Ruth baseball league play. The game was played at Prentis Park in Vermillion on Monday, June 16.
The result of the contest was a reversal of fortunes as the Cubs prevailed 13-10 by taking advantage of two 5-run innings using some shoddy fielding by FNB.
Line scores: Cubs 13 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors; FNB 10 runs, 6 hits, 6 errors.
Jeff Donnelly started and went two innings giving up five runs on two hits, three BBs and one K; Mikal Ustad lasted a third of an inning and was charged with three runs as he registered four walks; Jordan Merrigan gave up five runs on two hits and four BBs in his 1 2/3 inning assignment.
Alex Schaack brought up the end of the pitcher parade holding the Cubs scoreless during the final two innings. Unfortunately the deed had already been done and a four run fourth, plus fifth and sixth inning scores were not enough to climb out of the hole that had been dug.
Losing pitcher was Donnelly. Hitting leader was: Alex Anderson-Kahl with two singles. Donnelly, Schaack, Ustad, and Luke Heine each recorded a single.
