Applications sought for Century Farms Century Farms and Ranches will be recognized at a special ceremony held during the 2003 South Dakota State Fair on Wednesday, July 30.
The Annual Century Farm Recognition is a joint program of the South Dakota Farm Bureau and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. The program is designed to recognize those families who have retained constant ownership of their farm or ranch for 100 years or more in South Dakota.
A Century Farm must consist of a minimum of 80 acres of the original farmland and must have been owned by the same family for a minimum of 100 years. The ceremony at the 2003 State Fair will recognize those Century Farms that have not been recognized as a Century farm in previous years. Over 2,000 farms and ranches have received the Century Farm recognition in past years.
Deadline for application forms is July 11. The forms can be obtained from the South Dakota Farm Bureau office in Huron, phone 353-8052, or from the South Dakota Department of Agriculture in Pierre, phone 773-3375. The forms must be filled out completely and notarized before being returned to the South Dakota Farm Bureau office, PO Box 1426, Huron. Honorees will be notified at a later date of specific time and place for the award ceremony.
