FNB/V drops two in final week by Jim Prosser The FNB/V suffered two losses in the Vermillion/Yankton Babe Ruth League action last week as Yankton Prairie Wave and Yankton Cubs dealt them devastating results: 8-7 in extra innings; and a last inning five-run advantage for an 8-3 defeat.
Game one was played on July 15 in Yankton Sertoma Park versus Prairie Wave which was a see-saw battle with tie scores after three, five and six innings, and the home team scoring a run in the last half of the extra inning.
Alex Schaack started and gave up four runs on four hits, eight Ks and three walks in four innings. Jordan Boots went three innings being charged with the loss when giving up four runs on six hits, two Ks and four BBs.
Luke Heine led the offense with two singles. Mikal Ustad had a double and four other batters collected singles.
Game two paired FNB/V against the Yankton Cubs at Sertoma Park in Yankton on July 17. FNB fell behind 3-1 after one inning, then scratched their way to a 3-3 tie in the top half of the fifth, only to have the roof collapse on them in a five-run bottom of the inning.
With several base running mistakes and failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities they failed to take advantage of bases on balls as Cub pitchers were charged with 11 of them.
The line score was: FNB(V) � 3 runs, 3 hits, 5 errors; Cubs � 8 runs, 5 hits, 1 error.
Pitchers for FNB(V) were: Jordan Merrigan �three innings, three runs, three hits, five BBs, two Ks; and Jess Kirkpatrick � two innings, five runs, two hits, three BBs, one K. Hitters for FNB: Alex Schaack � two singles, Jordan Boots � a single.
The team ends its regular season with an 8-3 record on the two losses in the final week. The FNB/V team still retains #1 seed heading into the league tourney.
