Vermillion captures 2nd at Yankton tourney The 12 and under Vermillion baseball team was one of the 16 teams entered in the Yankton Babe Ruth Tourney. The tourney started out with pool play with the winner of each pool advancing to a bracketed tourney on July 6 to determine the top four teams.
In pool play the team started out with a 11-4 victory over the Yankton Stars on Friday night. The Yankton White Sox were defeated in a Saturday morning game 20-2. Canton and Vermillion squared off in game three of pool play. Vermillion jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for 6-5 win. The win put Vermillion 3-0 into Sunday's bracketed tourney against unbeaten Akron-Westfield.
Vermillion got off to a slow start on Sunday giving up five runs in the first inning. Vermillion tightened up the defense and battled back. Akron-Westfield tied the game up at 6 and left the go ahead run at third in their last at bat. Vermillion was able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to advance to the championship game.
Schultz Construction from Sioux City advanced unbeaten to meet Vermillion in the championship game. The teams battled back and forth throughout the contest. The score was tied at 5 a piece at the end of three innings.
Vermillion sent 18 men to the plate in their first at bat and forced Schultz to switch pitchers three times. Vermillion trailed 6-5 after four innings when Schultz exploded for five runs in the fifth. Determined not to be defeated the team responded in the top of the sixth with six runs of its own to tie the game at 11.
Vermillion also left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and knew that holding Schultz in the bottom of the sixth would be a tough task. With one out and the bases loaded Vermillion turned its third double play of the game to force extra innings.
Vermillion, despite getting a runner to second with one out, was unable to score in the bottom half; Schultz was able to score the winning run with two outs on an infield single.
