Vermillion team competes in tournament The Vermillion 12 and under baseball team played in the Yankton J-M travel team tourney on July 19 and 20. Saturday's games consisted of pool play with the top two teams advancing to Sunday's bracketed tourney.
Akron-Westfield was defeated in game one by the score of 6-1. Mitchell Thunder and Vermillion would meet for the third time this season in game two. Vermillion had played them tough in both games, but lost both.
Vermillion got off to a bad start and trailed 5-1 after the first inning. With solid hitting and defense Vermillion was able to battle back and closed to within 8-6 after three complete. Vermillion exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth to take an 11-8 lead.
Vermillion shut Mitchell down the last three innings to guarantee themselves a spot in Sunday's bracketed tourney.
The Cyclones, an all-star team from Sioux Falls would be their third opponent. Sioux Falls had not given up a run in their first two games, but Vermillion broke out on top early and led 2-1 after two innings. Vermillion trailed 8-3 after four and a half innings when in the bottom of the fifth the wheels came off for Vermillion and they gave up five runs. The final was 13-3 Sioux Falls, with both teams advancing to Sunday.
In Sunday's semi-final contest Yankton J-M 3-0 and winner of their Saturday pool would be Vermillion's challenger. Vermillion jumped out early and led 11-4 after three innings and 13-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. The game was far from over as Yankton plated six runs before Vermillion could get the final out and move into the championship game. Final score Vermillion 13, Yankton J-M 10.
The Cyclones had an 11-1 win over Brandon in the semis and would have too much fire power for Vermillion. The second inning was the back breaker for Vermillion as they allowed seven runs to score and trailed 8-1 after two complete. Vermillion scored its lone run in the fourth and ended up being defeated 12-1.
