VHS grad named WHS coach

VHS grad named WHS coach Bob Hirsch, a 1979 graduate of Vermillion High School, has been named head wrestling coach at Watertown High School. Hirsch wrestled at Northern State University gaining All-American honors twice. He graduated in 1983 and earned his master's degree in 1993.

Hirsch has coached the Milbank High School wrestling team the past 18 years. During his tenure there, the Bulldogs won 14 conference championships, won the 1990 State "A" crown, and finished in the Top 10 16 times. He has coached 22 individual state champions and 89 state place winners. He was named South Dakota wrestling coach of the year in 1990 and 1993. He was also Milbank High School teacher of the year in 1989 and 1993.

Watertown High School has won a record nine State "A" wrestling championships including the 2003 crown.

"This is an opportunity that my family and I feel blessed to have," said Hirsch. "Coach Sherrill has built a dynasty over the last 35 years. I'm going to do my best to keep that tradition going. Watertown's school system is very progressive and has an outstanding reputation."

Hirsch's wife, Nancy, will teach special education in the Watertown system. They have two children, Lindsey, 13, and Molly, 7. Hirsch is the son of Elaine Hirsch and the late Richard Hirsch of Vermillion.
