Wakonda team wins league tournament A sunny day on Saturday, July 12 welcomed six area teams to Gayville to compete for their league championship. The Wakonda team had to come back through the losers' bracket to beat Yankton twice in order to win the championship. The double-elimination tournament had Centerville, Gayville-Volin, Hurley, Irene, Wakonda, and Yankton vying for the first place trophy.
Wakonda opened the day with a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Warrior team lost its first game to Yankton at 11 a.m.
Because they lost, they had a tough day ahead of them beating Irene, then Hurley, and then having to beat the undefeated Yankton team twice to win.
The 7- to 9-year-olds had to play four of their games back to back. The day ended at 9:30 p.m. with the trophy on its way to Wakonda.
Coaches Monte Wagner, LaMonte Hessman, Lucky Huber, and Eric Larson attribute the win to great batting and steady defense in the field.
The tournament was an end to a great 12-3 season for the green team.
