Check It Out

Check It Out by Anne Marshall Showcased Book of the Week

Maxwell MacKenzie is one of the most important architectural photographers working today. American Ruins: Ghosts on the Landscape is a powerful pictorial essay in which he chronicles a fast-disappearing manifestation of the American Dream, the eloquent remains of barns, houses, and schools erected by immigrant settlers. His crisp black and white prints provide a poignant reminder that architecture sometimes becomes the most intriguing when it slips into ruin. Photographs, from the upper plains including South Dakota, and Rocky Mountains states, are accompanied by quotations from well-known persons and notes about each from the author.

Children's Videos

Get wild about reading and check out the new Between the Lions videos from the children's area. Visit a family of special lions who live in a library where characters pop off the pages, vowels sing, and words take on lives of their own. Parents Theo and Cleo and cubs Lionel and Leona share their favorite stories with you through a mix of live action, puppetry, and animation. This PBS series has won the Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming Award.

If you are caught in a jam, call on Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, played by Jean Stapleton, who stars as a loveable lady with a knack for helping kids and their parents out of the stickiest situations. From the top of her piled-high red hair to the tips of her funky tennis shoes, she's a genius when it comes to finding uncommon solutions to the common, everyday challenges that come with growing up. You'll enjoy this funny, colorful video series that teaches children about life in a wonderful, whimsical way. Both video series can be located on the children's video shelf.
