CorTrust Vermillion Youth 12 team places second at state softball tourney

CorTrust Vermillion Youth 12 team places second at state softball tourney The South Dakota State Girls' Softball Association championship crown was nearly claimed by the CorTrust Vermillion Youth 12 team.

The competition was held July 18-19 in Sioux Falls.

"The moral of our story is there is a team called Platte that won it all, and basically they killed us the first time we played them in the double elimination tournament," said coach Pat Amundson.

The Vermillion team moved into the tournament's losers' bracket, and defeated a team from Canton.

"We got to play Platte in the championship of the double elimination, and we beat them in the first game of the championship series," Amundson said. "We ended up losing the second game for all of the marbles.

"We came back in the losers' bracket and beat the team that eventually was crowned state champions, but we ended up losing in the last game," he said.

The tourney wraps up a season in which the CorTrust team played 36 games, including 18 tournament games.

"We played three second places in each tournament," Amundson said. "We pushed hard. The scores weren't so important. It's that we never gave up, and we pushed on as hard as we could."
