Did Post #1 team meet Joe Blfstk?

Did Post #1 team meet Joe Blfstk? by Jim Prosser If you have not followed the comics, you probably never heard of Joe Blfstk, an Al Capp character in the L'l Abner strip in the funny papers.

He was a little guy who wandered around always with a small dark cloud hovering overhead. No mater where he went, the cloud was always there, suggesting impending disaster.

Now I'm not superstitious but it's possible that the Vermillion Post #1 baseball team met Joe Blfstk in the sixth inning of their first state tournament game against Miller/Wessington Post 38/110 held at Parkston on July 30.

Sailing along with a comfortable 7-1 lead, aided by a three-run home run from Andy Ofstehage, past the midway spot of the game, Joe Blfstk brought disaster in the form of two consecutive fielding errors.

A strikeout ensued, but a hit, base on balls, another hit, and a third error opened the flood gates and, before the cloudburst ended, eight runs had crossed the plate. The M/W lead was increased with two more runs in the seventh and, while Vermillion responded with two runs in the eighth, it wasn't enough to overcome the disastrous sixth, and the final 11-9 loss.

Line score: M/W 11 r, 10 h, 5 er, 10 lob; Post #1 9 r, 10 h, 6 er, 7 lob.

Scoring stats for Vermillion were: Dan Holoch 1 run, 1 rbi, on 3-4 batting; Eric Rickord 2 runs, and an rbi; Kevin Bleil 2 runs, 2-3 at bats; Andy Ofstehage home run, 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs; Kyle Mollet, 2-5, 1 run; Drew Lawrence, 14, 1 RBI; Jared Burcham, 15, 1 RBI; Ben Oberle scored a run also.

The loser's bracket paired Post #1 vs. Parkston and it was hoped that a new day would bring better results. Oops, is that Joe lurking in the background?

Those ugly errors occurred again and there was no hope for Post #1. Adam Sudbeck pitched a two-hit, four-run, nine K, five-inning gem for Parkston and his teammates backed him up with a 16-run onslaught to make the final 16-4 and eliminate Vermillion from the tourney.

Line score: Parkston 16 r, 9 h, 0 er, 8 lob; Vermillion 4 r, 2 h, 7 er, 4 lob.

Eric Rickord had a triple, scored 2 and had 2 RBIs; Jason Donald had the other hit and scored a run; Dan Holoch scored the other run and Ben Oberle had an RBI when he reached base on a hit batter with the bases loaded.

The Vermillion Legion Post #1 ended their season with 19 wins and 20 losses.
