Irene planning chili cook-off It's time for area cooks to dust off the old kettle, break out those handed down family secret recipes and shoot for braggin' rights at the Irene Community Club's Chili Cook-off.
Contestants will fill Irene's North Park, east of the high school from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6.
Competitions will be held to determine the best chili, and salsa in the tri-county area.
The creator of the winning dish in each category will receive "braggin' rights" for a year and a trophy. Ribbons will be awarded for placements.
Also up for grabs is a special trophy to be awarded to the cook-off's "Best of the Best."
Public tasting of chili and salsa begins at 3 p.m.
"We'll have something for everyone. We've planned fun for the entire family," Lyn Nielson, Irene Community Club president, said.
The Irene Community Club is the sponsor of this premier cook-off.
"Registration deadline is Aug. 15, but everyone is encouraged to go ahead and get the ball rolling," Nielsen said.
