Martin named to heart association board The American Heart Association has announced that Vermillion-area resident Doug Martin, Ph.D. has been named to the organization's 2003-2004 board of directors for the Greater Midwest Affiliate.
The Greater Midwest Affiliate, which is the result of a recent merger, consists of the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Martin is the past-president of the AHA's Northland Affiliate board of directors and works as a researcher in the Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences at The University of South Dakota School of Medicine.
The American Heart Association spent about $389 million in fiscal year 2001-2002 on research support, public and professional education and community programs.
The organization has grown to include more than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters who carry out its mission in communities across the country.
The association is the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, which annually kill about 950,000 Americans.
