Vermillion Post #1 took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the elimination round of Region 3B against Alcester on Tuesday, July 22. In the second inning, Michael Thompson's homer tied the score with a three-run blast over the fence.
Starting pitcher Kevin Bleil then settled down and held the visitors to two runs the rest of the way and Post #1 enjoyed a 16-6 romp over Alcester.
Bleil was the winning pitcher as he held Alcester to six runs on two hits while recording seven Ks, one BB and one hit batsman. His defense had a lapse in one inning when they committed three errors.
Their offense made up the difference with a 12 hit barrage aided by two walks, six hit batters, and six errors by Alcester's team.
Offensively, Eric Rickord led the stats with two home runs, four runs scored and five RBIs as he reached base four out of five times. Danny Holoch was on base four times and scored three runs; Jared Burcham was one for four hitting, scored twice with 1 rbi; B.J. Campbell used his lead-off spot to good advantage as he went three for five, scored three runs and drove in two; Kyle Mollet was one for three with two RBIs and a run scored; Bleil scored one and one rbi with two for three hitting; Andy Ofstehage scored one and drove in one on one for three batting; Drew Lawrence scored once on one for four at bats.
Vermillion's season record improves to 18-18 with Lennox their next obstacle on their road to the state tourney.
