Post #1 out-duels Lennox in Region 3B tournament; exciting game ends 8-5 by Jim Prosser Vermillion's Post #1 Legion baseball team fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Steve Atkins stroked a two-run homer against starting pitcher Drew Lawrence.
That was about all they had to cheer about since Lawrence held them at bay and the bottom half of Vermillion's batting lineup contributed five runs of the total eight garnered by the offense.
The result was an exciting 8-5 victory in the third round of Region 3B at Lennox on Monday, July 21. Preceding the game, Harrisburg and Alcester won their third round games.
Lawrence was the winning pitcher for Post #1 as he held Lennox to five runs on seven hits while recording five Ks, four BBs and two hit batsmen. His defensive minded team mates again recorded only one error.
Kyle Mollet pitched the final two innings and was credited with a save.
Offensively we often give a lot of credit to the top of the batting order, but this time the six through nine slots did the majority of the scoring! Kevin Bleil went one for three scoring twice and driving in one.
Andy Ofstehage scored one and drove in one on one for four batting, while Jared Burcham was two for four at bat with one run scored; and Ben Oberle was one for three with one run and one rbi for the Post #1 team.
At the leadoff spot, B.J. Campbell reached base three times and scored two runs; and Drew Lawrence (one for three) aided his own cause by scoring a run and also driving in the last two Vermillion runs.
Mollet, went one for three; Eric Rickord was one for four; and Danny Holoch drove in a run on one for five batting.
Vermillion's season record improves to 17-18 as they went into the Tuesday game against Alcester in Lennox.
