Tanager golfers open season with second place showing at West Central Invitational by Jim Prosser With a short pre-season practice time, and facing a group of serious contenders for state honors, the VHS boys golf team entered the West Central Invitational at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
The 18-hole tournament involved 84 high school golfers on seven varsity and JV teams from diverse locations in South Dakota.
Final team standings were: 1. Madison 305, 2. Vermillion 313, 3. Milbank 326, 4. Aberdeen Central 328, 5. Lennox 337, 6. Sisseton 349, 7. West Central 362.
Scores for Vermillion individuals were: Nathan Boots � 75 (second), Chris Moen � 77 (fifth), Jordan Boots � 80 (11th), Broc Gauer � 81 (12th) and Brad Schaack � 82 (15th).
The JV team won their division with a score of 350. Individual scores were: Mikal Ustad � 85, Alex Schaack � 87, Ryan Powell � 89, Charles Odson � 89, Daren Martin � 95, Jared Bates � 95, and Jack Higgins � 99.
Coach Kirk Hogen has another young team to start the season. The varsity has six letter winners returning � one senior, two juniors, one freshman, and two eighth graders.
"Our 2002 state champ, Rob Schaack, is gone but we have a lot of young men who have worked very hard in the off season," Hogen said. "With Nathan Boots in the lead as an experienced golfer with good leadership skills, we have a young team that loves to play golf. Our success in the future will depend upon the way we handle ourselves during competition."
The complete roster is comprised of 15 golfers: Nathan Boots, a senior; juniors Brad Schaack, Chris Moen, Jared Bates, and Charles Odson; sophomores Jack Higgins and Daren Martin; Ryan Powell, a freshman; eighth-graders Jordan Boots, Alex Schaack, Broc Gauer, and Mikal Ustad; and seventh-graders Dan Davies, Anthony Nelson, and Tyler Vlasman.
