Two killed, two hurt in rollover accident by David Lias Two young men – one from Vermillion, the other from Texas – were killed late Tuesday night in a one vehicle rollover accident on Highway 19 three miles north of Vermillion.
Two other people – young women also from Vermillion and Texas – were injured in the accident that occurred shortly before midnight.
According to the Clay County Sheriff's Department, Matthew Hollingsworth, 21, Vermillion, and Benjamin Brettel, 17, Arlington, TX, were killed at the scene.
Emily Pier, 18, Vermillion, received non-life threatening injuries and was transferred by ground ambulance to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Lori Turner, 17, Arlington, TX, received critical injuries and was transferred to Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, IA, by air ambulance.
The accident occurred in a portion of Highway 19 currently under construction. The vehicle was southbound.
Pier was able to walk to a residence to report the accident. The other occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
The accident was reported to the Clay County Sheriff's Department at 11:48 p.m. Units from the sheriff's office, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Vermillion/Clay County Fire, Ambulance and Rescue responded to the scene.
The accident is under investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
