Eagles fall to Cardinals 54-6 Dell Rapids St. Mary traveled to Wakonda last Friday to take on the Irene/Wakonda Eagles in football action. When they left, the Cardinals took a 54-6 victory with them.
The top rated team in South Dakota in the 9B ranks took little time to assert themselves. The Cardinals took the initial kickoff and methodically drove the football across the field. Wingback Chris Bunkers scored his first touchdown to give DRSM the lead 6-0.
The Eagles could do little on their first, or subsequent possessions. A swarming Cardinal defense thwarted the Eagles attempts to run inside, outside or to pass. Forced to punt, the Eagles turn the ball back to the DRSM offense.
The Cardinals' second possession was much like the first, and they soon found the end zone again. This time the extra point conversion was good giving DRSM a 14-0 advantage. They would go on to add 40 more points before the game was stopped in the third quarter.
Eagle fans had a moment to cheer when freshman running back Robert Hauger took a handoff and sprinted untouched for a 49-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.
DRSM ended the game when Treavor Mergen returned an interception for a score.
The Eagles' leading tacklers on defense were Brett Logue, Jeremy Rempp and Derrick Pearson. Hauger led the offense with 51 yards rushing.
The Eagles will regroup to host the Emergy-Ethan Seahawks in Irene this Friday at 7 p.m. for homecoming.
