Freshman football team opens season with loss to Sioux City East by Jim Prosser Tuesday, Sept. 9, the VHS freshman football team opened their season with a 20-0 loss against Sioux City East frosh (black) team.
In a hard fought game, the Tanager frosh fell behind in the first half and couldn't recover as the bigger, faster, and stronger Raiders defense stifled the Tanager offense. It didn't help that the weather conditions became unbearable when a lightning and thunder storm dropped a 4" deluge, shortening the game to three quarters.
Ryan Scheidel ran for 9 yards on 3 carries and completed 2 passes for 19 yards; and Ryan Gilbertson Hays went 18 yards on 6 carries as the Raider defense put the clamps on the home team. Bobby Dykstra and Zach Weiss made the receptions.
The young Tanagers made a commendable effort defensively, holding the visiting team scoreless in the third quarter. Leading the tackle chart were: Scheidel 10; Weiss 8; Dykstra 7; Eric McPherson and Highrock Fischer 5 each. Twelve others on the roster recorded stops. The team registered 50 tackles and Weiss also recovered a fumble.
