JV football team drops 43-8 loss to Yankton team by Jim Prosser In a crisply played football game, the Tanager JV team suffered an uncharacteristic collapse against Yankton.
The game was played at the Yankton Middle School field on Monday, Sept. 15.
Falling behind 35-0 at halftime, the Tanagers' "hill to be climbed" was more than they could attain.
While the second half was a VHS JV 8-7 advantage , the die had been cast for the final score 42-8.
Yankton had a total offense of nearly 320 yards while the Tanager JVs gained just over 100 yards rushing and no passing yardage.
Leading runner for Vermillion was Cody Hayes who gained 62 yards on 16 carries. The Tanagers' single touchdown came late in the third quarter when quarterback Ben Oberle scored on a 19 yard scamper. His teammate Hayes ran for the 2 point conversion.
A stiff defense showed some sterling efforts by several players, including JJ LaMie (11 Ts); Donny Stewart (8 Ts); Jacob Geis and Karlis Baisden (6 Ts each); Kyle Mollet, Mike Hanson, and Ryan Mockler (5 Ts each).
The Vermillion JV football team's record stands at 1-1.
