Tanager JV football defeats South Sioux by Jim Prosser In an early 2003 season football game played at the VHS football field on Monday, Sept. 8, the Tanager JV Team faced adversity in the early going against SSC but rebounded quickly and secured a tie after the first quarter.
Both teams sported excellent defenses. The Cardinals blocked a punt and scored the first TD of the game. Then, courtesy of a 71 yard, 10 play, seven minute drive engineered by quarterback Kyle Brunick using seven straight carries by Ben Oberle (including 12 and 22 yard sprints) and a TD pass play of 10 yards to Kyle Mollet, the Tanagers scored, closing out the first quarter.
That is the total story of the game, except for a couple offense gems by the home team. The opening play in the second half was a 68 yard scamper by Oberle, aided by a key monster block by Chris Merrigan, to take the lead.
Defense was the name of the game after that, but a fumble recovery by Tanager Matt Sand gave Cody Hays a chance to display his running capabilties as he went 39 yards with a key block by Brandon Hanson, and a TD to complete the scoring.
Individual offensive stats: Oberle (163 yards/ 22 carries), Hayes (78 yds/12 carries); Oberle completed 1 of 3 passes/16 yds and Brunick was 5/10 for 74 yds. Oberle caught 2 passes totaling 16 yds; and Mollet received 4 for 74 yards.
A stiff defense involving the whole Vermillion roster had some sterling efforts by: Hays (9 tackles, and a pass bkup), Jacob Geis (7 T's); Mollet (5 T's, pass int.); Tony Kronaizl (4 T's) and Ryan Mockler (4 T's, pass int.).
Nine other defensemen were in on two or three tackles each. Donny Stewart, Jon and Joe Miller each had a QB sack.
