Tanager volleyball team competes in tournament The seventh-grade volleyball team opened up its season against the Dakota Valley Panthers on Sept. 18.
The Tanagers' D team lost to the Panthers 17-21 and 14-21. Vermillion's C team lost 15-21, then came back in the second match to win 21-19. The B team dropped the first match 12-21 and dropped the second match 9-21.
The Tanagers' A team swept the Panthers 21-15 and 21-12. The girls played really well for their first match of the season.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Tanagers traveled to Elk Point for their first tournament of the year. Vermillion opened the day playing Elk Point-Jefferson's Silver team.
The Tanagers dropped the first match 14-25, then came back to win the second match 25-19. In the tie breaking game, Vermillion trailed, but fought back hard to win by two, 16-14.
After defeating the Huskies, the Tanagers had to face a very good Sioux Falls Christian team in their second match of the day. The Tanagers ended up falling to the Chargers, 21-25 and 20-25. In the last match of the day, the Tanagers faced the Elk Point-Jefferson Blue team. Vermillion fought hard in both matches, but ended up losing to the huskies 14-25 and 16-25. Overall, the Tanagers placed fourth out of eight teams.
On Monday, Sept. 15, the C-Hawks of Canton traveled to Vermillion to take on the Tanagers. In the first match, the D team came out fighting hard and swept the C-Hawks 21-13 and 21-15. In the second match of the afternoon, the C team came out strong winning the first match 21-14, but ended up losing the second match 16-21.
In the third match, Vermillion's B team beat the C-Hawks 21-13. Despite playing well in the second match, the Tanagers fell 17-21. In the final match of the evening, Vermillion's A team came out roaring and never looked back, beating the C-Hawks 21-11 and 21-6.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Tanagers traveled to Chancellor to take on the Lennox Lady Orioles. The playing conditions were not ideal for volleyball. The Tanagers faced a very low ceiling, which hindered the serving a little bit. The D and C teams fell to Lennox 12-21 and 9-21, respectively.
The B team came out battling hard and won 21-19. Vermillion's A team kept the winning streak going with a 21-10 win over the lady Orioles of Lennox. After the A team was finished playing, Lennox wanted a rematch and won 17-21 over the Tanagers.
