United Way plans ‘Taste of Vermillion’

United Way plans 'Taste of Vermillion' United Way of Vermillion will hold its 2004 Campaign Kick-Off Event, "A Taste of Vermillion," on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 until 7 p.m. The "Taste" will be held at the new Al Neuharth Media Center at the corner of Cherry and Dakota Street on The University of South Dakota Campus. Everyone is invited to attend. Parking will be available in the Coyote Student Center parking lot and the new lot south of the media center.

Vermillion's restaurants will provide food for the public's enjoyment. The United Way 2004 member agencies will set up displays demonstrating the services they provide which benefit from United Way funding. There will be a short program at 6 p.m. honoring many United Way supporters. The theme and goal for the 2004 campaign will be announced at that time. There is no admission fee nor is there a charge for the food.

This year, due to United Way of Vermillion's partnership with The University of South Dakota IdEA program, the public is invited to meet the two young women who are staffing the University's Student Action Office.

Kate Talley, an Americorps Volunteer in Service to America, will be working to build capacity in low income and other challenged communities through students' service learning at USD. Jacquie Lonning, who served as an Americorps volunteer for three years while in college, will serve as the Student Action Coordinator.

For the third year United Way of Vermillion will be honoring an outstanding community volunteer. The Volunteer of the Year Award, which will be presented to an individual who gives unselfishly of his/her time and talents to aid the Vermillion community, will be presented at the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce and Development Company Banquet in January of 2004.
