Vermillion volleyball team falls to Minnesota opponents by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team faced four Minnesota schools last Saturday, Sept. 13, when they were entered in the Jackson County Central, MN Invitational.

They were treated rather roughly in the out-of-state competition as the were soundly defeated by talented, experienced squads.

"The tale of the day was a lack of communication and a breakdown in passing, along with our inexperience," said coach Lenni Billberg

In the Pipestone match, the Tanagers lost two, 25-8, 25-4.

The team stats were led by Colette Joy with 10 attacks, 8 passes, 1 kill , 3 points on serve, 1 ace, and 7 digs. She was aided by Jackie Thomas with 15 P, 7 A, 4 D, and 3 K. Also contributing were: Ellen Odson � 4 set assists, 5 POS, and 2 digs; Annie Carlson had 2 P,12 A, 1 D, 1 D; and Michelle Olson had 8 P, 7 A, 1 K, 2 blocks, and 4 D.

The match against Red Rock was much the same, with a two-game loss 25-19, 25-17.

Stats for the Tanagers were: Carlson led with 13 P, 23 A, digs (11), kills (5), and 2 POS; service points (5); Brittany Babb led in blocks (2), with 5 P, 5 A, 7 POS, and 4 digs. Joy had 14 P, 14 A, 6 K, 6 POS, and 7 D; Melissa Olson scored 10 A, 5 P, 4 K, 1 B, 6 POS, and 8 D; Odson was credited with 17 SA, 7 POS, 1 ace.

The final matches were against Sleepy Eye and Murray Co. West and resulted in 0-2 games against each of them.

Stats for the Sleepy Eye match were: Joy � 14 P, 19 A, 6 K, 5 D, 4 POS; Melissa Olson 9 P, 9 A, 3 K, 4 B, 5D, and 4 POS, with 1 ace; Carlson-8 P, 10 A, 3 K, 3 D; Thomas � 5 P, 6 A, 4 D; Odson-11 SA, 3 B, 2 D, 7 POS, 1 ace.

MCW match stats were: Carlson � 13 P, 13 A, 3 K, 1 B, 12 D, 2 POS; Melissa Olson 6 P, 12 A, 1 K, 2 B, 7 D, 2 POS; Thomas � 7 P, 7 A, 2 K, 2 D, 3 blocks, 2 digs; Odson � 8 D, 4 SA, 6 POS, 2 aces; Babb � 4 P, 1 A, 1 K, 2 D, 3 POS; Joy � 7 P, 3 A, 1 D, 5 POS, 1 ace.

"The Tanagers are not quite at the same level as the Minnesota teams, physically and mentally, so we have some work to do," coach Billberg said.
