Wakonda volleyball starts season with wins by Lindsay Nelson After three long weeks of practice the Wakonda Warriorettes finally had their long awaited season-opening game on Sept. 9 in Irene.
The night started out at 5:30 p.m. with the "C" team match. The Cardinals swept the match with a 2-0 win.
The Warriorettes' "B" team came out and went into three games with the Cardinals. The Warriorettes took the first and third match to win the game.
The varsity Warriorettes came out a little shaky but their first game jitters did not last long. The Warriorettes went on to win 3-0 with match scores of (25-22), (25-16), and (25-21).
Senior Chelsa Bohlmann led the team in service points with 10 with Lindsay Nelson and Nikki Johnston each added 7, respectively. Nelson and Erin Spurrell each added 5 aces also.
Johnston led at the net with 10 kills and two blocks, and Kim Henriksen led the Warriorettes' defense with five digs.
Senior Nikki Johnston adds this about the Warriorettes' first game. "Overall we didn't play very well and you could tell that there are still a few things we need to get worked out with the team, but a win's a win, so we'll take it," she said.
The Warriorettes' next game was at home against the Freeman Flyers on Sept. 11. Wakonda had a successful night with the "C," "B," and "A" teams all victorious. Both the Warriorettes' "C" and "B" teams won in two matches.
Wakonda's varsity beat Freeman 3-1 with match scores of 22-25, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-23.
The Warriorettes lost their first match but came out even more pumped up to win the next three.
Leading from the service line, Emily Logue scored 11 points and Johnston, 7.
Johnston led the team at the net again with 13 kills and 11 blocks. Henriksen also added six kills. Backing them up was Bohlmann with 20 kill assists.
Bohlmann and Henriksen led the defense with 12 digs each.
The Warriorettes are now 2-0 in season and 1-0 for conference games.
