Cross country team upsets '02 champs by Lindsay Nelson The Wakonda Warriors have been ready to avenge their second place finish at the State Cross Country Meet to Lower Brule all season long. At the Marion Invitational 5K run on Oct. 1, they did just that.
Robert Gregoire ran in for a second place finish of 16:07.38 to lead the Warrior pack. Not far behind Gregoire were Eric Skonhovd and Jason Holoch. Skonhovd placed fourth, 16:36.80 and Holoch placed ninth, 17:16.19.
Nick Skonhovd, Tyler Moser, and Bo Martz finished 14th, 22nd, and 28th with times of 17:27.18, 17:55.29, and 18:15.69 respectively to help secure the team's first place finish.
Lower Brule's Whitelight won the meet just in front of Wakonda's Gregoire. Lower Brule also claims the third place finisher, Grassrope. However, with Wakonda's Skonhovd's fourth place finish and the quality of the rest of the team, they placed high enough to make the team's total only 15 points. The Warriors ran away with the team award.
Top five team finishes and scores are as follows:
Wakonda, 15; Lower Brule, 37; Sioux Falls Christian, 38; Freeman,44 ; Hanson, 49.
Katie Sokolowski and Emily Miller both ran in the varsity girls' cross country run. Sokolowski placed 25th, 17:33.98 and Miller placed 42nd, 19:14.47.
This meet was the seventh first place finish for the Warrior Cross Country team. They beat the defending 2002 state champions and three of the top teams in their region.
