Eighth-grade football team has tough loss at Yankton by Jim Prosser The Redbird eighth-grade football team played a very entertaining close game against a determined and hard hitting eighth-grade team at the YMS field on Tuesday, Oct. 21, but couldn't overcome a couple of big plays by the opposition to suffer the 26-14 loss.
The score was tied 6-6 at halftime.
"The team played really well," said coach Jason Gault. "Fumbles and missed tackles were the major problems in the second half."
Scoring drives for the Redbirds were completed by a Cody Miller 15-yard run and a Matt Nelson 10-yard dash. Daniel Storm made a 2-point conversion. Miller completed 3 of 5 passes for 58 yards, and Jordan Merrigan made one catch for 30. Luke Heine rushed for 35 yards, Miller 24 yards, Storm 29, and Nelson 22.
The defense was effective for the entire game. Leading tacklers were: Ryan Husby with 6; Heath Hubert and Daniel Mollet 5 each; Heine had 4 Ts.
The season record ended 1-5, in a very tough league, losing three of their five by a TD or less. Coaches Gault and Lauren Tolsma agree that this is a great group of athletes and look forward to see them improve and develop into high school football players for VHS.
