Girls place first, boys second by Jim Prosser Fifteen schools participated in Class B division at the South Sioux City invitational cross country meet, Thursday, Oct. 2, with competition in both girls' and boys' varsity, and JV divisions.
The Tanagers' Justin Manning placed second, timed in 17:12.32, and other Tanager finishers were: Craig Powell � eighth; Chad Teigen � 10th; A.J. Manning 19th; Mitch Bierle � 26th; and Caleb Berry � 63rd. Vermillion took second place in the boys' team section.
For the varsity girls, team points were: Vermillion � 56, which gave the championship plaque to them. Katarina Gombocz came in second with a 16:11.77 time. Other Tanager placers were: Emily Renner � sixth, Kati Dehner � 22nd, Theresa Ring � 26th, Tera Dehner � 32nd; Sarah Plate � 37th; and Nicki Nelson � 38th.
In the boys' JV division there were no team points recorded. C.J. Harden, Raleigh Tiahrt, and Yanek Panneik were the Tanager representatives.
Coach Eric VanLocken felt that this meet was a great confidence builder for both teams since the boys and girls ran exceptionally well.
