Girls' tennis team ends season at state by Jim Prosser The Tanager tennis team finished its season by competing in the girls' state tournament in Sioux Falls, Oct. 9-11.
They finished the season in 21st place out of 22 teams at the 2003 state meet.
"We knew from the beginning of the season that we would struggle to win matches this year," said coach Barb Rickord. We had lost nine seniors to graduation and had an inexperienced team with some new young players.
"Our goals have always been to enjoy playing tennis and to improve over the course of the season," she continued. "In that respect, we have been successful and I credit the girls for their positive attitudes in the face of losses. They never gave up or were discouraged. At state I saw several girls play their best tennis of the year, and that's an accomplishment."
Four girls were in the semi-finals of consolation rounds but were unable to play those matches as they were cancelled due to rain on Saturday. Those girls were: Michelle Rydell (F1, #2 singles); Lauren Higgins (F1, #3 S); Zazzee Coleman (F1, #5 S); and Lindsay Morecraft (F1, #6 S).
Other participants at the tourney were: Jessica Leffers (F1 #1 S and doubles) and Sarah Roetman (F1, #4 S and F1, #3 D).
