Seventh graders post busy volleyball season On Saturday, Oct. 4, the seventh-grade Tanager girls' volleyball team competed in a tournament in Canton.

Teams involved in the tournament were Dakota Valley, Canton (two teams), Tri-Valley, Parker, Lennox, Centerville, and Vermillion.

In the first match, Vermillion faced a very good Tri-Valley team. The Tanagers led most of the way, but ended up dropping both games to Tri-Valley, 21-25 and 22-25.

In the second match, the Tanagers faced the Lennox Orioles. They played well both games and beat the Orioles 25-17, 25-17. Brianna Brinkmann, Kayla Gale and Erica Johnson had great serving games and were very active at the net.

In the third and final round, Vermillion faced a very scrappy Parker team. The Tanagers started off strong, but were unable to hold off the Pheasants and dropped both matches 18-25, 18-25.

Overall, the Tanagers came away with a sixth place finish.

Elk Point-Jefferson traveled to Vermillion on Monday, Oct. 6.

Vermillion's "D" team faced a very good EPJ team and fell 5-21 and 10-21. Jadye Hein and Jennifer Schaner both had good serving matches.

The Tanagers' "C" team played very well behind Katie Hanson and Rozzie LaMie, but could not manage to hold off Elk Point and dropped both matches 16-21 and 20-22.

Vermillion's "B" team was up next and ended up dropping two quick ones to EPJ, 12-21 and 6-21.

In the last match, EPJ saw a very aggressive Tanager team. Vermillion's "A" squad fought hard the first match and beat EPJ 21-16. Brianna Brinkmann and Sara Kjose played very aggressively for the Tanagers.

In the second match, Elk Point came back strong and held off the Tanagers 21-19. Erica Johnson had a great serving game for the Tanagers. In the tie-breaking match, Elk Point-Jefferson out-lasted Vermillion and hung on for a 15-9 win.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Tanagers traveled to Madison for the Big 8 Tournament. The teams competing were West Central, Lennox, Madison, and Vermillion.

The Tanagers took both an "A" and a "B" squad to Madison and the number of wins between both teams decided what place the team got.

In the first round, Vermillion faced West Central. The "A" squad played two very good games, but ended up dropping both, 19-21 and 21-23. Justine Sorensen, Dana Hannahs, and Sara Kjose played very well against West Central.

Vermillion's "B" squad started out the afternoon beating West Central 21-18 and 21-16. Mila Higo, Katie Hanson, and Donica Crichton played exceptionally well.

In the next round, Vermillion faced a very good Madison team. The "A" team had some trouble serving and dropped both matches to Madison 5-21 and 18-21, despite strong efforts from Kayla Gale and Brianna Brinkmann.

The "B" team was also plagued with a lot of missed serves and dropped both matches to Madison 14-21 and 8-21. Angie Christensen and Donica Crichton played really well against a tough Madison team.

In the final round of the Big 8 tournament, Vermillion faced Lennox for the third time this year. Behind the efforts of Sara Kjose and Brianna Brinkmann, the "A" team downed the Orioles 21-14 in the first match.

In the second match, Lennox looked for a little revenge and beat a very tired Tanager team 18-21. The "B" team faced Lennox next and lost the first match 14-21, but then came back fighting hard and beat Lennox 21-19. Angie Christensen and Emily Tracy did a great job of serving in the final match of the day.

Overall, the Tanagers finished third in the Big 8 tournament.

The Tanagers faced Yankton on Thursday, Oct. 16. They will then travel to Yankton for a tournament on Oct. 28, which will be the final match of the year.
