State reports West Nile death South Dakota reported its 13th West Nile virus death Oct. 20. Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth said a Sanborn County resident in the 40 to 50 age group died Oct. 24. Additional information is not being released to protect patient confidentiality.
"West Nile has taken a real toll in South Dakota this year and we offer our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones to the virus," said Hollingsworth.
Previous West Nile deaths have occurred in Bennett, Brown, Clay, Meade, Hutchinson, Pennington (4), Shannon (2) and Ziebach counties.
The meridian age of the West Nile deaths is 76 years, ranging from 1 month to 89 years. Twenty-three percent have been female and 77 percent male. There have been 1,038 cases of human West Nile disease reported among South Dakota residents.
