Tanager girls fall victim to SF Lincoln tennis team by Jim Prosser On Friday, Oct. 3, the VHS girls' tennis team fell victim 8-1 against Sioux Falls Lincoln.
Singles: Whitney Visser (L) def. Jessica Leffers 6-2, 6-0; Paige Beck (L) def. Michelle Rydell 6-4, 6-3; Lauren Higgins (V) def. Kelly Hansen 6-3, 0-6, (7-1); Rachel Schmeiding (L) def. Zazzee Coleman 6-2, 6-0; Jen VanHove (L) def. Lindsay Morecraft 6-1, 6-4; and Jordan Boehmer (L) def. Liz Day 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles: Visser/Beck def. Leffers/Rydell 6-2, 6-0; Hansen/Schmeiding def. Higgins/Coleman 6-2, 6-2; and VanHove/Boemer def. Morecraft/ Day 6-1, 6-1.
"This was our last regular match of the season and was a good warm-up for state," said coach Barb Rickord. "Our #4 player Sarah Roetman was out with an injury so Liz Day moved into varsity at #6. We're hoping Sarah will be ready for state next week.
"Lauren Higgins at #3 showed a lot of composure and consistency in winning a tiebreaker after a let down in the second set," she continued. "She has the ability to win matches and this gave her some needed confidence. We look forward to the Oct. 9-11 state tournament in Sioux Falls. All schools with tennis teams participate in the same tournament."
In JV singles the Tanagers were swept: Andrea Smith (L) def. Alicia Hesla 6-2, 6-0; Linda Yang (L) def. Taiana Hayes 6-1, 6-0. Doubles: Smith/Yang def. Hesla/Hayes 6-3, 6-3.
