Vermillion Redbird football team dumps Canton 24-14 by Jim Prosser Temperatures in the high 70s greeted the Redbird eighth-grade football team as they faced Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Demonstrating an awesome display of intensity and speed on both defense and offense, the home standing young Redbirds held the CMS team to four first downs and no scores in the second half. The C-Hawk TDs came on running back 15-yard and 8-yard runs in the first and second quarters.

Offensive stats were scoring summaries: #1, Matt Nelson � 42-yard TD run (first quarter); Jordan Merrigan � 2-point pass reception; #2, Daniel Storm recovered a fumble and returned it 99 yards for a TD (third quarter) and Nelson ran for the 2 pointer; #3, Cody Miller on a 19-yard scamper (fourth quarter) and Luke Heine ran for the 2-point conversion.

The Redbird defense was a community project as it bent a lot, and broke a couple times. Leading tacklers were the sextet of Heine � 11; Thomas Mollet � 10; Ryan Husby � 8; Miller � 8; C.J. Haakinson � 7; and Heath Hubert � 7. Altogether, 18 different Redbirds were on the tackle chart.
