Vermillion woman part of winning Army ROTC team The South Dakota State University Army ROTC's Ranger Challenge Team placed third in overall competition at the Tri-State Ranger Challenge Competition Oct. 18 and 19 at Camp Ripley, MN.
Members of the ROTC team were Chris De Curtins of Brookings, Kurt Kesteloot of Marshall, MN, Marty Scovly of Brookings, Chad Klay of Magnolia, MN, Adam Sokolowski of Brookings, Dale Vukovich of Brookings, Joe Herreman of Rapid City, Jordan Day of Highmore and team captain Justin Espland of Lake Norden.
Cadet Penny Decker of Vermillion competed on a composite team made up of cadets from several schools.
The competition was a culmination of six weeks of intense training in the one-rope bridge, 10K-road march, hand grenade assault course, weapons assembly/disassembly and Army physical fitness test and orienteering events.
Cadet Skovly was selected as the most valuable team member.
Nine teams from South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota participated in the annual competition.
