VHS freshmen lose 34-8 to Canton C-Hawks by Jim Prosser Tuesday, Sept. 23, the freshman football team suffered its second loss of the season with a 34-8 decision for the Canton C-Hawks, played at the Burdell Coplan field in Canton.
It was a hard-fought game, but the Tanager frosh fell behind in the first half and couldn't recover as the C-Hawks defense held the Tanager offense to only 80 yards rushing.
If it wasn't for their passing game, the outcome might have been worse since the Tanagers accumulated 78 yards in the air.
Ryan Scheidel had 40 yards rushing and completed five passes in 15 attempts, as Bobby Dykstra (1 for 22), Ryan Gilbertson (1 for 6) Zach Weiss (1 for 14) and Highrock Fischer (2 for 36) accounted for half the team's offensive total. The second quarter score for Vermillion was a short run by Scheidel and a 2-point conversion by Fischer.
The young Tanagers put forth a spirited effort defensively, but couldn't contain the rushing C-Hawks. Leading the tackle chart were: Fischer 11; Jeff Donnelly 9; Gilbertson 8; Dykstra 7; Nick Schaffer and Ryan O'Connor 5 each. Eight others on the roster recorded stops. The team registered 74 tackles.
