VHS volleyball B team places third in tournament

VHS volleyball B team places third in tournament by Jim Prosser Last Saturday, Sept. 27, the Vermillion High School B volleyball team competed in the Sioux Falls Washington invitational.

Eight schools were entered and assigned to one of two pools for the preliminary rounds of the tournament. Pool A was comprised by Brandon Valley, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, and Vermillion. Pool B consisted of Lennox, Flandreau, Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Washington.

Vermillion went 2-1 in pool play as they lost to Brandon Valley 25-10, and 25-23; then defeated Lincoln 25-12, 20-25, 15-12; and also beat O'Gorman 25-21, 25-16.

Vermillion's 2-1 standing qualified them for the consolation round. They placed third in the tourney when they defeated Washington 26-24, 22- 25, and 15-10.

The championship match had Roosevelt defeating Brandon Valley 20-25, 25-20, 18-16.

Here are the Tanager (B) player stats vs. BV: Brittany Campbell � 7 set assists; Heather Walker � 2 blocks, 3 kills; Laura Aga � 7 service points, 1 ace, 5 digs; Paige Prosser � 2 kills; Kelsie Austin � 7 POS, 2 aces; and Brittany Weydert � 2 kills, 5 D.

"We didn't play up to our potential in spite of facing a larger school in Brandon Valley," said B team coach Jon Ruevers.

JV individual stats vs Sioux Falls Lincoln: Leading the scoring offense were: Kinsey Weydert � 13 POS, 3 aces, Laura Aga � 10 POS, 5 D; Brittany Weydert � 2 K, 6 D; Prosser � 3 K; Walker � 2 K, 4 B, 6 D; Campbell � 2 SA; and Annie Roche � 3 B.

"We played very well against a very bigger school," said coach Ruevers.

Match #3 vs. O'Gorman: Campbell � 8 POS, 5 SA; Walker � 8 POS, 4 B, 4 D; B. Weydert � 2 K; K. Weydert � 5 SA; Prosser � 2 K, 2 B; Aga � 4 D; K Austin � 2 D.

"This was our best played match of the year � excellent effort," Ruevers said.

Consolation match for third place vs. Washington: Heather Walker � 4 B, 7 D; Prosser � 2 K, 1 B; K. Austin � 15 POS, 4 aces, 3 K, 4 D; K. Weydert � 14 POS, 4 aces, 12 SA; Roche � 2 K; Aga � 6 D.

Coach Ruevers was ecstatic about the 3-1 record for the day.

"We played outstanding volleyball against four great teams in the tournament. I'm very proud of the lady Tanagers' effort," he said.

The overall season record is now even, five wins, five losses.
