Wakonda Warriors cross country team is 5-1 by Lindsay Nelson The Wakonda Cross Country team traveled to Freeman on Sept. 16 to participate in the Freeman Cross Country 5K Invitational. The Warriors went into the race with a record of 4-0 and came away 5-0 with their fifth consecutive first place finish. This first place finish was also significant because it broke the consecutive wins record at Wakonda.
Out of 66 runners, Rob Gregoire ran his fourth, first place finish of the year with a time of 16:52. Eric Skonhovd was next for the Warrior team placing third, 17:03. Jason Holoch and Tyler Moser ran in for 16th and 29th places respectively with times of 18:37 and 19:36.
Katie Sokolowski was the only girl runner for Wakonda and came out on top winning the Freeman JV Girls' Meet with a time of 12:03. Sokolowski also claimed the fastest Freeman 3K Meet record at Wakonda for both the Girls' Varsity and JV with her first place time.
The Freeman meet was the largest "B" Cross Country meet Wakonda has participated in so far this season. The Warriors scored 20 points to beat Freeman who accumulated 33 points.
Wakonda then had a week off until their next meet, which took place on Sept. 22 at Alcester.
The team participated in the Alcester-Hudson 5K Invitational with almost a full roster. Senior Nick Skonhovd returned after being out with an injury along with Junior Emily Miller but the Warriors were without Moser due to injury.
Miller runs for her school, Irene, but practices and travels with Wakonda since she is the soul runner for Irene.
Leading in the Warrior pack was Rob Gregoire. Gregoire placed second in the meet with a time of 15:58. Gregoire's time also qualified as one of the top class "B" times in the state.
Next for the Warriors was Eric Skonhovd. Skonhovd ran in for sixth place, 16:22. Holoch and Nick Skonhovd finished with places of 12th and 16th with times of 17:10 and 17:22.
The varsity boys rallied together to take second place making their record 5-1 for the season thus far.
For the JV 4K race, Bo Martz ran in for his first winning finish of the year with a time of 15:22. Martz broke the Wakonda cross country record for the Alcester-Hudson 4K meet.
Sokowlowski finished the girls' JV 3K race with another first place finish. She ran in for a time of 14:10, giving Sokowloski her second first place finish of the year.
Wakonda is now 5-1 and will be competing in the upcoming Viborg TVC Invitational on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
