Yankton defeats VHS Tanager freshmen 35-6 by Jim Prosser Thursday, Oct. 2, the freshman football team faced a tough Yankton team, with only a one-day layoff after the Sept. 30 contest against SC East.
In a hard-fought game, the Yankton frosh gained over 300 yards while Vermillion could only muster 150 total yards as they were stifled at every turn in the lopsided 35-6 loss.
Our team statistics were mainly dominated by the defense since Ryan Gilbertson gained 40 yards on 12 carries, and Zach Weiss went 25 yards in 10 rushes for most of our offense.
The young Tanagers made a gallant effort on defense. Leading the tackler was Bobby Dykstra with eight. Gilbertson scored four Ts; Weiss had four Ts and a pass intercept (returned 20 yards); and Ryan O'Connor was credited with two tackles and a pass breakup.
"We need to maintain our blocks each play, and get more physical," said freshman coach Jason Huska. "Yankton has a nice team. They have size and some speed. When we decide to play a more physical game, we will be a good team."
