District 8A championship goes to Elk Point/Jefferson by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team ran into a tough challenge last Thursday night, Nov. 6, as they were outscored by Elk Point/Jefferson 26-24, 25-17, 25-23 in the District 8A tournament.
The Tanagers could not overcome the onslaught as the Huskies won the right to advance to Region 4A where they face the Beresford Watchdogs.
"Highlights for Vermillion included the breakout offensive display of Annie Carlson with 12 kills, as well as the defensive and passing excellence of Jackie Thomas," said coach Leni Billberg.
Stats for the Tanager team were: Melissa Olson � 6 kills, 3 blocks, 5 service points, 1 ace, and 6 digs; Colette Joy 16 POS, 2 aces, 7 kills, 10 digs; Ellen Odson led the offense with 30 set assists, 12 POS, 1 ace, 2 Ks, 15 digs; other leaders were: Jackie Thomas � 2.73 PA, 15 passes, 19 attacks, 2 Ks, 20 digs; Michelle Olson � 2.11 PA, 9 passes, 22 attacks, 7 kills, 5 digs, 8 POS; and Annie Carlson � 20 passes, 23 attacks, 12 kills, 17 digs, 8 POS.
"The Tanager varsity season record ends at 7-19, however, each athlete will look back on the season of fun, learning, and let it be the fuel for further success," Billberg added.
