Eagles' football season ends The Irene/Wakonda Eagles season ended with a 34-0 loss to the Bridgewater/Canistota Crusaders last Thursday night. It was the first round of the 2003 football playoffs.
The Eagles played a staunch defensive game against a powerful Crusaders offense in the first half. The Crusaders scored with four minutes left in the first quarter. They would not score again until the last play of the half, making the score 14-0 at halftime. The Eagles were unable to mount any serious offensive drives, leaving the defense on the field for a long time.
The second half was much like the first half. The Crusaders scored near the end of the third quarter to take a 20-0 lead. Crusader speedster Max Mager scored his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the game in the last quarter on long runs of 35 and 33 yards to break the game open.
Defensively for the Eagles, Brett Logue was the leading tackler with eight and a half tackles. Jeremy Rempp had eight stops, and Brett Mellem was in on six and a half tackles. Mark Hauger had an interception.
Offensively, Brandon Parvin carried the ball 10 times for 51 yards. Brett Anderson hauled in four. Alex Nielsen passed for 53 yards in pass receptions.
The Eagles ended their inaugural season with a 3-6 record.
