Firearm safety kits are available Cable-style gun locks are included in the Project Child-Safe safety kits. The Vermillion Police Department and Clay County Sheriff's Department are participating in "Project ChildSafe," a national program to help ensure safe and responsible firearms ownership and storage through the distribution of firearms safety kits. The program is funded by a grant through the Department of Justice.
Residents who own firearms may pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit so they can securely store their firearm. Each kit contains a safety curriculum and cable-style gun lock. The locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm.
The police department and sheriff's department are combining our kits. Together they have 900 kits. Anyone interested in obtaining a kit may do so by responding to the Clay County Communications window at the Public Safety Center. They will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the supply is exhausted. Initially, distribution will be limited to two kits per person.
