USD freshman dies in Saturday accident by David Lias Melissa Ann Mau, 18, a University of South Dakota freshman from Elk Point, is dead following a one-vehicle traffic accident Nov. 15 near Vermillion.
Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe said local law enforcement responded to the accident at approximately 1:40 p.m. Saturday.
Mau, driving a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier, was traveling east on Highway 50 near Vermillion
when the mishap occurred.
Mau was taken by ambulance to the Vermillion hospital. The Clay County Sheriff's Department assisted the South Dakota Highway Patrol, which investigated the accident.
"My understanding is that she was eastbound and lost control of the vehicle," Howe said, "and crossed the westbound lane."
Mau's car struck a tree near a farmhouse.
The Plain Talk's attempts to contact the highway patrol trooper who is investigating the accident were unsuccessful.
Media outlets reported earlier in the week that Mau had a history of seizures, and that may have been the cause of the accident.
Howe said Mau was the only occupant of the vehicle.
