USD women drop 75-56 exhibition game in Ames Led by 18 points from Lisa Kreiener, Iowa State took a 75-56 win over South Dakota (2-1) in exhibition play on Sunday, Nov. 15 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, IA.
For South Dakota, junior forward Kayla Jacobs hit six 3-pointers and led South Dakota with 18 points. Junior All-American Mandy Koupal had another double double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Utilizing speed and a height advantage, Iowa State opened up a 13-0 lead en route to a 40-25 halftime advantage. After missing their first three shots, the Cyclones found the range, converting 12 straight shots in a 7:45 span.
Before the Coyotes could gather themselves, Iowa State led 31-6 with 10:47 left in the opening half. Iowa State increased their lead to 31-6 at the 10:47 mark of the first half.
After a timeout, the Coyotes came back out with a new focus. The mistakes stopped and the baskets started falling. USD went on a 13-0 run as Jacobs, Koupal and Jenni Flynn all hit 3-pointers to draw USD within 31-15 with 9:05 to play.
When senior guard Erin Bourne hit two free throws, USD had drawn within 12 points at 31-19 with 6:32 to play. In the next 3:45, USD missed their next nine shots.
Iowa State slowly moved the lead back to 18 points. Jacobs hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to keep the Coyotes within 40-25 at halftime.
At the break, Jacobs led USD with 6 points while Koupal had 5 points, six rebounds and two assists. The Coyotes hit just 8-of-33 shots for 24.2 percent, including five of 14 3-point field goals.
Twice early in the second USD had chances to draw within single digits but 3-pointers by Bourne were off mark. USD's Vanessa Yanez scored inside at 44-30 at 16:22 to keep the Coyotes within striking distance.
However, the Coyotes could not sustain their offense and a rebound score by Mary Fox provided Iowa State with a 58-37 advantage with 8:30 to play.
Jacobs hit her fourth 3-pointer at the 8:05 mark as South Dakota trailed 58-30. A 3-pointer by Erica Junod gave Iowa State a 63-40 lead with 6:32 to play. Jacobs again hit from deep, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, her second at the 3:15 mark, to draw USD within 69-46. Flynn also connected from long distance. The freshman hit consecutive 3-point baskets with her second � third of the game � at the 1:40 mark as USD trailed, 73-52.
Overall, USD hit 19-of-59 field goals for 32.2 percent, including 11-of-32 3-pointers. Flynn ended with 9 points. Iowa State made 31-of-62 field goals for 50 percent and 7-of-18 3-pointers. Junod had 16 points and Mary Fox contributed 10 for the Cyclones. ISU won the rebounding battle, 44-30.
Next for South Dakota is the Coyote Basketball Classic on Nov. 21-22 at the DakotaDome. USD will play�Northern State at 8 p.m. on Nov. 21 and Wayne State at 8 p.m. on Nov. 22 at the DakotaDome. The tourney will also include Nebraska, Omaha. Games will be played at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on both nights.
