VHS volleyball team claims first-round District 8A win

VHS volleyball team claims first-round District 8A win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team outscored Alcester/Hudson last Monday night, Nov. 4, when they won a three-game first round district 8A match, played in the Alcester High School gym, 16-25, 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 15-12 to eliminate A/H from the District 8A tournament.

"When the chips were down, the Tanagers showed their true colors, finding a way to win," said coach Leni Billberg. "Jackie Thomas and Colette Joy brought the team back from the brink of elimination to a berth in the championship district match."

"Also aiding in the momentum swing was the blocking of Melissa Olson who had 6 solos and 3 assists.

Individual stats for the Tanager team were: Ellen Odson � 19 A, 11 digs, 27 SA, 16 POS, 3 aces; Colette Joy � 2.11 pass avg., 18 P, 35 A, 11 K, 16 D, 23 POS, 3 aces; Jackie Thomas � 2.30 PA, 27 P, 13 A, 4 K, 16 D, 2 SA; other leaders were: Melissa Olson � 34 A, 11K, 9 B, 7 D, 17 POS, 6 aces; Annie Carlson � 17 P, 26 A, 5 K, 15 digs and 11 POS; Michelle Olson � 21 P, 29 A, 6 K, 16 D, 5 POS.

The Alcester/Hudson leaders were: Ashley Pearson � 9 set assists; Katrina Winquist had 6 aces and 23 digs; Angie Fickbohm claimed 7 kills and 23 digs; Megan Kleinhaus had 8 assists.

The Tanager varsity record stood at 7-18 prior to facing Elk Point/Jefferson on Thursday, Nov. 6 for the championship pat Alcester.
