4-H horse judges training is Jan. 30 South Dakota 4-H will hold horse judge training Jan. 30 at the West River Ag Center in Rapid City. It will run in conjunction with the Black Hills Stock Show.
The training runs 7 to 10 p.m. MST, with registration running 6:30 to 6:45 p.m. MST.
Matt Gunderson, South Dakota State University Extension assistant youth development/4-H, said that the purpose of the training is to certify individuals to judge county 4-H horse shows.
He added that it will provide a pool of trained judges to serve 4-H youth in horse projects.
Individuals who successfully complete the program will receive certification cards and will be added to the statewide judges list.
Presenters during the training will include Gary Nies, South Dakota State 4-H horse liaison, Donna Schwartz, South Dakota 4-H horse leader/certified horse judge, and Gunderson.
The training will address topics such as showmanship, judging English classes, animal welfare, equitation, stock seat, and safety in the ring. A review of the 4-H Horse Show Rulebook (SH 90) will emphasize 4-H rule updates.
