Eagles capture tournament title by Nikki Johnston The Irene-Wakonda Eagles won the Irene Junior High Tournament on Saturday Dec. 13.
In the first game they took on a scrappy team from Freeman. The Eagles started out slow scoring only three points while giving up nine. But the Eagle defense then took over in the second quarter, holding Freeman to zero points. The Eagle offense also started to pick up the pace ending the first half with the score tied at nine all.
In the second half the Eagles prevailed by a final score of 22-18, sending them into the championship game.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Kerstin Roesler with nine points. Kelli Johnston added seven while Nicole Nielsen put in five more.
In the championship game the opponent would be Ethan, who beat Menno to earn their right to take on the young Eagles.
The I-W defense proved to be too much for Ethan, holding them scoreless in the first quarter and going on to win by a score of 22-17.
Guiding the way to the hardware was Melanie Kathol with eight points, Nikki Schenk with four, while Johnston, Brittney Bakke, Casey Hessman, Nielsen, and Bridget Healy all chipped in two each.

"The defense of the Eagles definitely won the championship. Our offensive skills are not as great as I would hope for at this point, so we have to hold the other team to less points then we can score. The defense is a team effort and it comes from the heart. They deserved that trophy and I'm proud of all the girls," said Coach Rocky Johnston about the win.
The next game for the Eagles is in the finals of the Tri-Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Viborg beginning at 8 a.m.
